Camaguey Presentation and Overview

Camaguey Province, one of the best places in all of Cuba, is the largest Province of Cuba and the City of Camaguey is the third largest city (about 300,000).
There are beautiful beaches along the north shore of Camaguey and mostly swampland along the south. The fairly flat grasslands are in the middle and much of Cuba's beef cattle and dairy cattle are raised in this part of of the country.

The panorama of Camaguey is uniformly flat, broken up only by palm trees, whilst the soil, some of the most fertile in the land, makes it suitable for the growing of sugar cane. The area is also cattle country-home to herds of cattle, primarily Cuban Charolais, which are bred for beef, and Zebu, bred for their milk.

This province is also home to one of the most important port towns in the country, Nuevitas, which handles the transportation of the many thousand of tons of sugar produced by the 13 provincial sugar mills.
Camaguey also boasts the up and coming beach resort of Santa Lucia, some 100km north of the city.

Camaguey Beaches

Santa Lucia Beach is located on the north shore and is probably Camaguey's top tourist attraction at this moment. The beaches are incredible and the scuba diving superb. There are several other beaches ripe for development like Cayo Romano, currently a wildlife preserve and Cayo Sabinal, very close to Santa Lucia Beach.

We believe that ultimately the area of the Jardines de la Reina will be developed around the Gulf of Anna Maria. It is a 100 mile long stretch of small islands that is incredible for scuba diving and such other activities as fishing for bonefish, tarpon and permit.

Camaguey City

It was one of the most important cities in the colonial period, nowdays it has a wealth of fine baroque churches and some picturesque nooks and crannies, such as the restored Plaza San Juan de Dios.
Sightseeing in the city will inevitably bring you to a closer appreciation of the life of the city's hero, Ignacio Agramonte, as there is both a park and a museum dedicated to his memory. The city itself is one of the prettiest in Cuba, full of architectural gems testifying to its colonial past. Near the train station you can find The Museum of the Birthplace of Ignacio Agramonte. Visit the La Merced church opposite to see its peeling frescoes and the venerated objects stored in its crypt, finally the best of this city is Plaza San Juan de Dios which is an old cobblestoned square surrounded by brightly hued, single-storey buildings and a lovely yellow church alongside a restored former hospital.

This charming Spanish colonial city, the third largest in Cuba, is in the middle of a cattle-ranching region. Camaguey City is associated with early revolutionary Ignacio Agramonte, who led unsuccessful revolts against the Spanish in the mid 1800s. Sights include La Soledad and other historic churches, plus one of Cuba's largest museums, the Museo Provincial Ignacio Agramonte, which has exhibits on the history and fine art of the region.
As elsewhere, local authorities have started to actively discourage contact between locals and foreigners, but you can hear a form of music indigenous to Cuba, La Trova (performers singing ballads with guitar accompaniment), nightly at the Casa de la Trova in Agramonte Park. Also, try too see a Cuban rodeo while you're in the area. Cuban cowboys (vaqueros) have their own unique style. Outside of town are the Sierra de Cubitas -- river gorges with dramatic cliffs.

Within the province of Camaguey, there are some beach areas worth checking out, too. Lesser-known than Varadero and Cayo Largo -- but maybe not for long -- is the Santa Lucia resort area on the north coast, which is especially popular for its diving and snorkeling. Resorts like the Cuatro Vientos and Vita Club Caracol already show that Santa Lucia has the potential to become another Varadero. You'll also want to spend some time on the sand at Playa Los Cocos, which is 4 mi/6 km northwest of Santa Lucia. In the morning you'll be alone; later you'll share it with locals -- a rather rare treat in Cuba. Camaguey is 300 mi/485 km southeast of Havana.
